Demands on regional rail transport are constantly growing, requiring continuous adaptation of existing train fleets to new route profiles. BeNEX GmbH commissioned the modernization of seven FLIRT vehicles that have been in service with nordbahn since 2014. Starting in December 2026, these trains will take over operations on the Regionalexpress Line 34 (Dortmund-Siegerland-Express). Contract partners for this project are the subsidiaries WestfalenBahn GmbH and NBE nordbahn Eisenbahngesellschaft mbH & Co. KG. The aim of the retrofit is to adapt the trains to the current quality and comfort standards of their new operational area.
Technical upgrading and interior optimization
As part of the contract, the vehicles will undergo extensive technical and visual upgrades. The exterior design will be updated, while fundamental modifications to the layout will be made in the interior. Through modified seating as well as new tables and armrests, the space for passengers, luggage, and bicycles is specifically optimized. To meet modern connectivity requirements, technicians will integrate a new Wi-Fi system, USB charging ports, and additional power outlets. All measures will be implemented including the necessary approvals required for operation.
Decentralized project implementation on a tight schedule
The structural conversion work requires efficient logistical planning. The integration of the first Wi-Fi systems in the pilot vehicle will begin as early as summer 2026. The operational work is divided between the nordbahn workshop in Hamburg and the Stadler site in Berlin-Reinickendorf. The step-by-step conversion of the entire fleet is scheduled over a period of three years and is expected to be completed by summer 2029.
"The renewed cooperation with the BeNEX Group confirms the trust in our performance. With the modernization of the FLIRT vehicles, we not only ensure the quality demanded by the transport authorities on the RE 34 taken over by WestfalenBahn, but also demonstrate our capabilities at the Berlin-Reinickendorf location," explains Bernd Bettels, Managing Director of Stadler Rail Service Deutschland GmbH.
