Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) and Hitachi Rail have signed a contract for the revamping of the Al Mashaaer Al Muqaddassah Metro Project (MMMP), marking a significant milestone in the ongoing modernization of railway infrastructure serving the Holy Sites in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The contract will be formally executed by Carlo Piacenza, Signalling and Rail Solutions SRS Vice President Middle East and Africa at Hitachi Rail, and Dr. Bashar Al Malik, Chief Executive Officer of SAR.
The Al Mashaaer Al Muqaddassah Metro plays a vital role in transporting pilgrims between Mina, Muzdalifah and Arafat during the annual Hajj pilgrimage. The 18-kilometre railway system comprises nine stations and is designed to carry approximately 72,000 passengers per hour per direction, ensuring the safe and efficient movement of millions of pilgrims during one of the world's largest annual gatherings.
Under the contract, SAR and Hitachi Rail will work closely together to revamp and enhance the metro system, with a strong focus on improving reliability, operational performance and long-term service sustainability.
The agreement reflects the shared commitment of SAR and Hitachi Rail to delivering efficient, dependable and high-quality mobility solutions that support pilgrims throughout their Hajj journey. The project will also contribute to the Kingdom's broader ambition to develop world-class transportation infrastructure and continuously improve the mobility experience during Hajj.
