Alstom, global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, inaugurated its newly renovated and expanded testing laboratory within its Digital & Integrated Systems (D&IS) organisation in Bucharest. Backed by an investment of more than €1 million, the new facility significantly enhances Alstom's capability to develop, integrate and validate advanced rail signalling and electrification solutions for projects in Romania and internationally. The investment includes the renovation and extension of the facility known as the Field Integration and Validation Platform (FIVP), a specialised engineering environment where signalling, electrification and digital rail solutions are integrated, tested and validated before deployment in operational railway networks. The platform enables engineering teams to simulate real-life operating conditions, verify system performance, reduce implementation risks and ensure the highest levels of safety, reliability and interoperability.
"At Alstom, innovation becomes meaningful only when it translates into safer, more reliable and more sustainable mobility for our customers and passengers. This investment in our Field Integration and Validation Platform demonstrates our long-term commitment to engineering excellence and to Romania's role as a strategic centre of expertise within Alstom. The expanded laboratory will enable our teams to develop and validate the next generation of signalling and electrification solutions that will help shape the future of sustainable rail transport. Alstom highlights its leadership position on the Romanian market in both signalling and electrification, supported by major national railway modernisation projects," said Bogdan Cozoș, Alstom Managing Director for Digital and Integrated Systems (D&IS) Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova.
A strategic investment in engineering excellence
The expanded FIVP will allow Alstom engineers to test complete signalling solutions in an integrated environment, bringing together key technologies including ERTMS, interlocking, train control and traffic management, as well as CBTC solutions for urban transport. Testing can be performed either at complete system level or on individual subsystems and their interaction with field equipment. This enables engineering teams to validate how the different elements of a signalling solution work together before they are deployed on the railway, supporting the delivery of safe, reliable and high-performing solutions for customers.
The expansion also marks a significant increase in testing capacity. The upgraded FIVP will enable teams to run two complete system tests or up to six subsystem tests in parallel, compared with the previous set-up where testing capacity was constrained by available equipment and workstations. Beyond increasing capacity, the new environment will make it easier for specialists from different engineering disciplines to work together and validate complete solutions. The upgraded laboratory will support projects in Romania, Europe and international markets, accelerating testing while further strengthening Alstom Romania's engineering expertise.
The inauguration marks another milestone in Alstom's continued investment in Romania, a country where the company has played a pioneering role in the modernisation of railway transport for more than 30 years. Through state-of-the-art digital rail control, signalling and electrification projects, rolling stock solutions and maintenance services, Alstom continues to contribute to a more sustainable and efficient transport system.
Powered by people
The new laboratory will be operated by Alstom Romania's growing signalling engineering community of over 200 highly skilled and highly motivated engineers, software specialists, testers and rail signalling experts. Their expertise supports both domestic and international projects, contributing to the development of advanced railway systems that improve safety, reliability, capacity and sustainability for rail operators and passengers around the world. The enhanced facility provides these teams with a modern and collaborative environment that will foster knowledge sharing, attract new talent and strengthen Romania's role as one of Alstom's key engineering hubs.
