Alstom, a world leader in smart and sustainable mobility, launches today the report “Bringing the railway up to speed with Sweden – five proposals for a better railway system.” The report highlights the importance of safeguarding Sweden’s railways and presents concrete solutions to create a more punctual, high-capacity, and innovative transport system.
The railway is central to Sweden’s success story, not only as an efficient means of transport but also as a key driver of economic growth, regional development, and social cohesion. More than a billion train journeys take place each year in Sweden, twice as many as in the 1990s. The Swedish Transport Administration estimates that rail travel will increase by 47 percent by 2045.
Historic investments are now being made in both new and upgraded infrastructure. The railway industry will play a crucial role in this development and can contribute with both expertise and modern solutions. Based on five areas of improvement – punctuality, capacity, outdated infrastructure, skills development, and innovation – Alstom has identified five proposals to maximize the impact of upcoming infrastructure investments:
The five proposals in brief:
1. Increased collaboration delivers more railway for less money
Stronger cooperation between the industry and authorities increases speed and optimizes the construction processes in the upcoming national plan.
2. Let the experts accelerate the rollout of ERTMS
Harness industry expertise for faster implementation of the digital signaling system ERTMS, which enhances punctuality, capacity, and safety.
3. Modernise procurement and financing models
Use new methods to streamline railway construction and maintenance, and improve opportunities for public–private partnerships
4.Leverage and develop skills within the railway sector
Educational initiatives at all levels are needed to meet today’s and tomorrow’s skills requirements in the industry.
5.Greater focus on research and innovation
Promote technological development and innovations that can strengthen the railway’s role in a sustainable transport system.
« Our hope is that this report will inspire decision-makers, industry players, and the public to prioritise work on railway infrastructure as a vital pillar of a climate-friendly, reliable, and future-proof transport system », says Maria Signal Martebo, CEO of Alstom Sverige.
Alstom is the largest supplier in the Swedish train market, with over a thousand trains delivered to the Swedish railways and several large maintenance contracts. Alstom is also leading the implementation of the European Railway Traffic Management System (ERTMS) in Sweden, both on board the vehicles and along the tracks.
