As the world gathers for COP30, Alstom, global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, urges decision-makers to put rail at the heart of strategies to decarbonise transport. Rail stands as the most efficient, inclusive, safe, and resilient mode of mass mobility, essential to meeting the growing needs of urbanising populations while reducing the sector’s carbon footprint.
Alstom welcomes Brazil’s initiative to host the first-ever Transport Pavilion at a COP, a milestone that reflects the growing recognition of transport’s pivotal role in achieving global climate goals. The event also marks 70 years of Alstom’s presence in Brazil, celebrating decades of contribution to transformative urban mobility projects that drive sustainable growth across cities and regions.
“Decarbonising transport is one of the most powerful levers for addressing the climate emergency. Rail infrastructure investments are not just climate actions, they are social, economic, and environmental imperatives,” said Véronique Andriès, Vice President Sustainability & CSR, Alstom. “At Alstom, we work hand in hand with our customers, partners, and policymakers to shape a mobility ecosystem that is clean, connected, and inclusive. COP30 offers an invaluable platform to accelerate collective action and unlock financing for greener, smarter transport solutions.”
Investment in rail to reduce emissions and stimulate economic development
This year, Transport will be among the thematic axes of the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference. On that occasion, Alstom is sponsoring the first ever Transport Pavilion at COP, in association with SLOCAT, the Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport Partnership. With transport responsible for around 25% of global CO₂ emissions, Alstom will reaffirm its dedication to Net Zero mobility and will highlight the essential contribution of public transport—and rail solutions in particular— to advancing sustainable development, through economic growth, better connectivity and cleaner air, helping to tackle climate change worldwide.

Sustainable solutions for customers and passengers worldwide
By developing innovative, eco-designed solutions with minimized carbon impact, Alstom continues to play an active role in shaping public policy discussions on sustainable development and accompanying its customers in their transition towards sustainable transport systems. To illustrate its commitments worldwide, Alstom regularly releases Impact Reports demonstrating how rail mobility meets transportation needs and delivers environmental, social, and economic value in the regions where Alstom operates. Since COP29, Alstom has issued Impact Reports for France, Canada and Spain, and will publish editions for Brazil, South Africa and Sweden in the next few weeks.
Key Alstom CSR & Sustainability objectives reached since the last COP
Alstom has been participating in the conference since COP21 in Paris and its CSR & Sustainability strategy and objectives are aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Since the last COP in 2024, Alstom has progressed with its objectives particularly on the key themes of Moving toward net zero mobility, Resources preservation and Responsible value chain. Alstom met its energy efficiency and emissions reduction targets ahead of schedule, with passenger transport energy use cut by 25.7% per passenger-km vs 2014, and Scope 1 & 2 emissions cut 40% (compared to 2021). Alstom has achieved 100% eco-design across its new portfolio and hit 25.8% recycled materials in its new rolling stock solutions, with a target extended to also cover infrastructure raised to 40% by 2030. Lastly, Alstom has a cleaner supply chain with 18% reduction in emissions intensity over the last year, and has improved circularity and environmental impacts through its product lifecycle.
70 years of presence in Brazil, supporting urban mobility in the country and Latin America
COP30 coincides with Alstom’s 70 years of presence in Brazil, with strong contribution over the years to urban mobility projects, while also promoting social progress, support to communities through the Alstom Foundation and preservation of the environment, leveraging its recyclability and circularity practices. Currently employing close to 1,500 people in Brazil, Alstom has delivered rail transport systems to major passenger operators in Brazil, including in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Fortaleza and Recife and has also supplied trains and systems for other countries in Latin America and around the world, such as South Africa, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Romania, and Taiwan.
Alstom supporting the first ever COP Transport Pavilion
COP30 will see the first ever Transport Pavilion at a COP, jointly hosted by the Brazilian Ministry of Cities, Ministry of Ports and Airports, and Ministry of Transport, in partnership with Brazil’s Sistema Transporte and SLOCAT. Offering the opportunity to foreground the importance of a just and sustainable climate transition for transport, the Transport Pavilion will provide a forum to bring together governments, civil society and the private sector. Alstom is proud to sponsor the Transport Pavilion and will host an event on the importance of rail and active mobility to transport decarbonisation on 15 November.
