Alstom, global leader in sustainable and smart mobility, took part in the inauguration of the northern branch of the Réseau express métropolitain (REM) by La Caisse and CDPQ Infra, extending this automated urban rail system from Montreal’s Central Station to the municipality of Deux-Montagnes on the North Shore of the metropolitan area.
The branch will open to the public on 17 November, adding 14 new stations and 2 connections to the underground metro. The expansion adds 33 kilometres to the network, bringing the total system to 50 km. The expanded system now connects both the North and South Shores to downtown. The South Shore branch, which opened in 2023, connects Brossard and Central Station.
The North Shore branch will offer a modern, reliable, safe, and high-frequency travel experience to residents of Montreal and the North Shore, crossing Mount Royal in record time to reach downtown.
Alstom has provided REM with a fully automated, driverless metro system, including rolling stock and signalling. The company also participates to the operation and maintenance of the planned 67-kilometer system for 30 years via Pulsar, a joint venture created by Alstom and AtkinsRéalis.
This world-class system includes 212 Alstom Metropolis metro cars (106 two-car trainsets), Alstom’s Urbalis GoA4 solution (the highest level of automation on the market) for driverless operation and CBTC-based train control, the Urbalis Vision control center solution, platform screen doors, onboard Wi-Fi connectivity, and cybersecurity. Alstom has also delivered equipment for two depots and two train washing facilities. REM maintenance teams use Alstom’s HealthHub digital platform, a predictive maintenance tool that monitors the health of the train fleet and infrastructure in real time, leveraging AI to analyze all data captured across the rail system.
Once completed, REM will be one of the largest, most advanced automated transport networks in the world, with 26 stations spanning 67 kilometers, connecting downtown Montreal to the South Shore, North Shore, West Island, and Montreal-Trudeau International Airport.
Michael Keroullé, President and CEO of Alstom in the Americas, stated: “We are very proud of the work accomplished by our talented employees, in collaboration with our partners, to commission this new branch of the REM. This new section, which offers a state-of-the-art, fully electric, automated, and high-frequency metro system, will transform the lives of thousands of residents of Montreal and its North Shore who travel daily, enabling them to do so efficiently, comfortably, and safely. More specifically, this extension will allow them to cross Mount Royal in less than three minutes – a first! With the REM, Alstom is showcasing its full range of urban technologies, highlighting both its local and global expertise in sustainable and smart mobility.”
With their unique design and features, REM’s Metropolis cars reflect and draw inspiration from Montreal’s landscape and history, offering passengers a unique window on their city.
Alstom employs more than 2,000 people in Quebec, with its Americas headquarters located in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, Québec.
