Dutch railway operator Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) and Stadler have signed a framework agreement for the delivery of 36 FLIRT trains for commuter transport. The new trains will allow NS to increase capacity and comfort on the Dutch network. Stadler is building the trains entirely in Poland. They will enter service in 2030.
Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) is increasing capacity with the new fleet of 18 four-car and 18 six-car FLIRT trains from Stadler. NS aims to meet the needs of growing ridership in the Netherlands in the coming years. The latest agreement strengthens the long-standing partnership between NS and Stadler.
NS: "Reliable and modern trains are important to us"
Wouter Koolmees, CEO of NS: "We are delighted to continue our collaboration with Stadler and to introduce these new sprinter trains in the Netherlands. It is important to us that these trains are reliable and modern. They are suitable for various routes and services. This means we are well equipped for the future and can continue to meet the changing needs of our passengers."
Ansgar Brockmeyer: "The vehicle can be used in a variety of ways."
"Nederlandse Spoorwegen was looking for a modern vehicle for local transport that could also be used as an intercity train. The FLIRT train impressed NS with its modular and versatile concept. Passengers can look forward to a comfortable, bright and well-designed train. I would like to thank NS for their trust and look forward to continuing our collaboration," says Ansgar Brockmeyer, Head of Marketing & Sales and Deputy Group CEO at Stadler.

Comfortable, brightly lit and accessible
The new trains are accessible, with a clearly laid out interior and plenty of space for luggage, pushchairs and bicycles. The travel experience is enhanced with real-time passenger information displays, clear signage and designated areas for passengers with reduced mobility. The lighting system automatically adjusts brightness and colour temperature to suit the outside environment, time of day and season, creating a calm and pleasant atmosphere.
The modular design for NS represents the next step in the development of the trusted FLIRT train. Stadler has already sold more than 3,000 FLIRT trains in 24 countries worldwide, 134 of which are currently in reliable service in the Netherlands.
Trains to be built in Poland
The new trains are expected to run on the NS network starting in 2030. Stadler is engineering the trains at its site in Prague, and the vehicles will be manufactured at the Stadler plant in Siedlce, Poland.
