Hitachi Rail employs more than 1,300 people across Canada and is home to the global engineering excellence center for the Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) business, in Toronto. Hitachi Rail's SelTrac™ CBTC solution, helps global urban public transport operators to carry three billion passengers every year. In Toronto, this technology will be used to power both the Ontario Line and is live on the Finch West Light Rail, for the expansion of Toronto's TTC system.
Hitachi Rail is supporting a first-of-its-kind Railway Engineering Specialization at Ontario Tech University. Hitachi Rail is contributing to the development of course content, providing student placement opportunities, and exploring joint research and development options. This partnership allows Hitachi Rail to provide student learning opportunities through rail-related guest lectures in courses, student capstone projects and recruitment initiatives.
In Vancouver, Hitachi Rail has delivered SelTrac™ technology for the SkyTrain network for 40 years and is one of the first driverless systems in the world; the network averaging 481,000 weekday boardings in 2025. Through each phase of growth over the past 40 years, Hitachi Rail has worked in partnership with SkyTrain providing ongoing support from the Vancouver office location which employs 100 people.
Hitachi Rail is dedicated to fostering the next generation of talent through its Early Careers Program. Each year, the company offers more than 80 and growing paid co-op and internship opportunities to students across the Greater Toronto Area, Ontario, and Vancouver/Burnaby, British Columbia. This program not only provides valuable hands-on experience but also serves as a strong talent pipeline, with approximately 40% of participants transitioning into full-time roles.
