Siemens, Stadler, and partners win major Berlin contract

The companies S-Bahn Berlin, Siemens Mobility, and Stadler Deutschland have won the procurement process for the Berlin S-Bahn. With the receipt of the award notice, the contract is now legally binding. The project includes the provision of 350 four-car trains, maintenance over 30 years, and the operation of the North-South and Stadtbahn sub-networks for 15 years. The decision secures thousands of jobs and strengthens regional value creation, as both vehicle manufacturing and maintenance are firmly anchored in the capital region. Heiko Büttner, Michael Peter, and Peter Spuhler unanimously emphasized the importance of this contract for the sustainable and efficient mobility of millions of passengers.

Proven vehicle concept with state-of-the-art technology
The ordered trains are based on the proven series used on the Ringbahn network, which has already demonstrated high technical reliability over more than 120 million kilometers. The familiar design is retained, but the concept has been consistently further developed. The new vehicles feature a modern driver's cab, updated fire protection, and the latest cybersecurity standards. An optimized drive system also sets new benchmarks in energy efficiency. For passengers, Stadler offers a bright interior concept with flexible multi-purpose areas, USB-C charging ports, and an innovative, environmentally friendly cold-water air conditioning system for maximum travel comfort.

Predictive maintenance through digitalization
The maintenance of the fleet will be managed over the entire contract period by Siemens Mobility's digital platform, Railigent X. By networking vehicles and infrastructure and continuously analyzing condition data in real time, a shift to predictive maintenance is being achieved. The Railigent Fleet Manager monitors the vehicle condition, allowing potential faults to be detected early and significantly increasing the reliability of the fleet. Digital processes in material and personnel planning reduce operating costs, while comprehensive cybersecurity services ensure the permanent safe operation of the systems.
