Ferrovial, through its Construction division and its Polish subsidiary Budimex, has been awarded the Podłęże–Gdów (F+J) sections of the new Podłęże–Piekiełko railway line in the Małopolskie region of Poland.
The contract, valued at approximately 2.58 billion PLN (around €604 million), is considered one of the most technically complex civil engineering packages within Poland’s national railway development programme. The project also represents the first tunnelling joint venture between Ferrovial Construction and Budimex.
The contract was awarded by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe, the public entity responsible for managing, modernizing and operating more than 95% of Poland’s railway infrastructure. The new rail corridor forms part of a major national initiative aimed at improving regional connectivity and strengthening rail links from Kraków toward southern Poland.
New electrified railway and tunnelling infrastructure
Under a 46-month construction programme, the consortium will deliver approximately 17.5 kilometres of new electrified double-track railway and an additional 1.9 kilometres of electrified single track.
The project also includes the construction of two parallel railway tunnels of approximately 900 metres each, representing one of the most technically demanding components of the development.
Extensive civil engineering works
The infrastructure package includes a wide range of structural works required for the new railway alignment. In total, the project will involve:
- 39 bridges and viaducts
- 24 culverts
- 2 railway underpasses
- 18 retaining walls
Ground engineering will also play a major role in the project. The works include the installation of more than 1,244 kilometres of soil-reinforcement columns and approximately 112,500 cubic metres of structural concrete.
Strategic expansion in Central Europe
The Podłęże–Piekiełko project represents a significant step in Ferrovial’s strategy to expand its presence in Central Europe and strengthen its expertise in complex railway and tunnelling infrastructure.
By participating in this large-scale rail modernization initiative, the company aims to support the development of sustainable mobility infrastructure and improve transportation connectivity in the region.
