Melbourne first Next Generation Tram delivered by Alstom into passenger service
The tram has been developed from Alstom’s Flexity 2 design and is built locally at Alstom’s Dandenong site in Victoria with over 65 percent local content.

Alstom, global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has delivered the first of 100 Next Generation G Class Trams (NGT) into passenger service in Melbourne, Australia. This marks the start of delivery for a €700 million contract awarded to Alstom in 2022. Alstom will maintain the fleet from a purpose-built facility in Maidstone, Melbourne.
The NGT program is at the heart of the Australian rail industry, with a nation-leading 65 percent of local tram content. Built at Alstom’s Dandenong site, the NGT program has supported more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs. Alstom has invested more than AUD $40 million (€24 million) in capital expenditure at Dandenong to strengthen local industrial capability.

A tram designed and assembled in Australia, for the benefit of Australians
More than 1,000 stakeholders, including disability groups, drivers, the Public Transport Users Association and other passenger representatives, contributed to the design of the NGT through an extensive consultation process, helping tailor the tram from Alstom’s proven Flexity 2 design to the needs of Melbourne’s tram network, the largest tram network in the world. The tram features low floor accessibility, regenerative braking, more doors and aisle space with a capacity for more than 150 passengers, making it Melbourne’s most accessible tram ever.
The G Class will be rolled out in stages across Melbourne’s tramway network where more than 80 percent of the trams operating have been built by Alstom at its Dandenong site over its 70-year plus history. A state-of-the-art light rail vehicle maintenance facility operated by Alstom in Maidstone, Melbourne evidences the design, manufacture, infrastructure and maintenance capabilities of Alstom’s Australia operations.
Guillaume Tritter, Managing Director of Alstom Australia and New Zealand identified the strength of partnership between Alstom and the Victorian Government as a key to success. “The G Class journey into passenger service has been made possible thanks to the financial investment made by the Victorian Government and a spirit of understanding, collaboration and problem-solving that has defined this program from its early days. The determination and trust placed by the Victorian Government to build here in Victoria is commendable. NGT is proof that rollingstock can and should be built here in Australia by Australians for Australians,” he said.
In 2026, Alstom has delivered the first X’trapolis 2.0 train and NGT tram into passenger service in Victoria as well as the first Australind train in Western Australia.
