Alstom and Italo celebrate the strength of their innovative partnership at InnoTrans
Alstom, global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, and Italo, Italy’s first private high-speed rail operator, this past September 23rd unveiled the next chapter of a collaboration that has been driving the evolution of Italian high-speed rail for nearly twenty years, during InnoTrans 2026.

During a talk hosted at the Alstom stand, Gianbattista La Rocca, CEO of Italo, and Michele Viale, Managing Director of Alstom Italy, spoke of the 12 new Avelia Stream high-speed trains currently under construction for Italy at Alstom’s facilities in Savigliano, Sesto San Giovanni and Bologna
A Partnership That Goes Beyond Trains.
The collaboration between Alstom and Italo began in 2008, when Italo selected Alstom as its industrial and technology partner for the supply and maintenance of the fleet that would launch Italy’s first private high-speed rail operator. Since then, the relationship has evolved alongside Italo’s growth, becoming a long-term industrial partnership that has contributed both to the operator’s expansion and to Italy’s emergence as one of Europe’s most competitive high-speed rail markets.
Over time, the partnership has expanded well beyond the supply of rolling stock. Today, Alstom acts as the Entity in Charge of Maintenance (ECM) for Italo’s entire fleet, delivering a fully integrated, 360-degree model that encompasses maintenance, fleet management, technical support, modernization programs and digital innovation throughout the trains’ lifecycle.
Every day, more than 220 Alstom professionals work across maintenance depots to ensure fleet availability, reliability and service continuity. At the heart of this ecosystem is the Nola Digital Depot, where 24/7 operational control rooms, real-time data and digital solutions such as HealthHub, TrainScanner and TrainTracer leverage advanced algorithms and AI-powered analytics to anticipate potential issues, optimize maintenance planning and maximize fleet availability. Innovative technologies, including the 3D printing of selected components, also help improve spare parts availability and accelerate maintenance interventions.
The partnership also extends to enhancing the passenger experience through Nomad Digital, an Alstom Group company that supports Italo in the development of next-generation connectivity solutions and digital services. Among these is the pioneering deployment of a hybrid connectivity platform integrating 5G networks and Starlink satellite technology, providing passengers with a more reliable and higher-performing internet connection, even along the most challenging routes.

Thanks to the launch of Italo, Italy became the first European country to introduce competition to the high-speed rail sector, setting an example for others to follow. With Alstom, we share a forward-looking vision of shared and sustainable mobility. Our goal is to continuously innovate to provide passengers with safety, reliability, and comfort. We started with 25 AGV trains and chose Alstom once again when we invested in 26 EVO trains. Most recently, we placed an order for 12 additional Alstom Avelia Stream trains tailored for the Italian market. These will begin service at the end of next year, bringing our total fleet to 63 trains.” said Gianbattista La Rocca, CEO of Italo.
Built in Italy and developed on the foundation of Alstom’s more than 40 years of high-speed rail expertise—supported by over 2,900 high-speed trains delivered worldwide—Avelia Stream trains reaffirm the central role of Italian railway expertise in the development of the Group’s high-speed solutions. The new train will be officially unveiled in the coming months at Alstom’s Savigliano facility, in the province of Cuneo.
