Cities and regions seeking reliable, weather-resistant and flexible mobility solutions are increasingly turning to tram-trains. The Danish city of Aarhus is expanding its existing network with CITYLINK vehicles from Stadler, which operate seamlessly across both urban and regional environments. The agreement signed on December 2, 2025 builds on a longstanding partnership between Stadler and Aarhus Letbane and includes construction of the vehicles at Stadler Valencia.
High Performance in Winter: Operation Even with Iced Overhead Lines
CITYLINK stands out from competing solutions through its strong winter readiness. The vehicles were designed specifically for climatic conditions such as those in Aarhus. Their traction batteries enable energy-efficient hybrid operation and keep services running even when overhead lines are iced. This capability ensures year-round operational reliability and reduces weather-related disruptions.
Flexible Use Without Transfers: One System for City and Region
A key feature of the vehicle family is its ability to operate both on urban tram lines and regional railway tracks. This eliminates many transfers, making public transport more attractive. The four-car vehicles accommodate up to 324 passengers, including 152 seats, 16 of which are foldable. They combine high capacity with comfort and versatile interior layout options.
Inclusive Design: Accessibility Fully Integrated
CITYLINK fully complies with PRM standards and is designed for easy, safe use by all passengers. Sliding steps at both end cars enable level boarding, while low-floor areas ensure unobstructed movement inside the vehicle. Dedicated wheelchair spaces are provided in each end module.
Energy Efficiency and Sustainability at the Core
The vehicle series optimizes energy consumption, emissions and passenger comfort. These attributes support Aarhus’ sustainability goals and make CITYLINK a solution that meets current requirements while anticipating future mobility needs.
Stadler Strengthens Its Leading Role in the Tram-Train Segment
With the delivery of the new CITYLINK vehicles, Stadler further reinforces its leadership position in the global tram-train market. The vehicle family is engineered to deliver a reliable, efficient and appealing travel experience—encouraging more people to choose public transport.
