Stadler reached at the beginning of September 2025 a major production milestone with the delivery of its 100th EURODUAL locomotive to European Loc Pool (ELP). The dual-mode locomotive will immediately enter service with Havelländische Eisenbahn AG (HVLE). This carries symbolic significance and emphasizes the strong cooperation between Stadler, ELP and HVLE in advancing sustainable rail freight transport.
The handover marks a new chapter in the success story of the EURODUAL locomotive platform. By placing this landmark locomotive with HVLE—the launch customer of the EURODUAL—Stadler and its partners demonstrate their ongoing commitment to flexibility, efficiency and greener transport solutions.
Hybrid locomotive for environmentally friendly operation
Since signing a framework agreement with Stadler in May 2019, ELP has steadily expanded its modern hybrid locomotive fleet, including EURODUAL and EURO9000 locomotives, across Europe. By taking the 100th unit of this platform into service, ELP further enhances its ability to offer operators truly flexible full-service leasing solutions that cover both non-electrified lines and the electrified main network.
HVLE was Stadler’s very first EURODUAL customer when it signed an initial contract in March 2017 for ten dual-mode locomotives. As the launch customer, HVLE has played a key role in demonstrating the versatility and performance of dual-mode technology.
EURODUAL: Transforming European rail freight
Since its introduction, the EURODUAL has reshaped European rail freight by combining zero-emission electric traction with the versatility of a powerful diesel engine to operate on non-electrified sections. This dual capability enables heavy-haul services, efficient shunting without additional locomotives, and seamless cross-network operations.
Equipped with 6.2 MW electric power and a 2.8 MW diesel engine, the EURODUAL delivers up to 500 kN of tractive effort and speeds of up to 120 km/h. Advanced features such as ETCS signaling, state-of-the-art three-axle bogies, integrated remote monitoring and predictive maintenance ensure high performance and reliability.
The delivery of the 100th EURODUAL is a clear testament to the platform’s success in driving efficiency, flexibility and sustainability in European rail freight.
